Live with Emma, online

Most of us learn photography by admiring other people’s work and trying to emulate it. That’s a fine way to begin, but at some point it stops being satisfying; because the photos come out looking like someone else’s, not yours.

This is a full day for finding what’s yours. Not one fixed “style” to commit to forever, but the subjects, moods and ways of seeing that are already pulling at you (often without your noticing). In the morning we’ll experiment, playfully and without pressure, trying on different photographic voices to see which feel true. Then, individually, you’ll take one of them out into the world and follow it. In the afternoon we’ll come back together look at what everyone found, and you’ll start to see the thread running through your own choices.

This is for you if your photos are technically fine but you’re quietly wondering what they’re for. Bring curiosity; leave the pressure at the door.

How the day runs

10am–12 · Trying on voices
This is the experimental part of the day; a morning of group exercises, trying on different ways of seeing, noticing the subjects and moods you're already drawn to (and loosening the some of your habits). There are no wrong answers here. By midday you'll have a handful of directions that feel like they might be yours, and one to take out and follow.

12–3pm · Out on your own
Now you go out with your camera. Three unhurried hours to follow the voice you chose, out in the world, seeing where it leads. Emma will stay available the whole time in case you get stuck, but give the idea a real go, even if it feels unfamiliar; the point is to follow what draws your eye, not to come back with something safe.

3–5pm · Making sense of it
We come back together to look at what everyone found. This is the gentler part of the day where we notice the thread running through your choices; the thing that's recognisably yours. We’ll talk about how to keep following it on your own, and how to explore other voices that are calling you without feeling conflicted. You'll leave making photographs that feel like you.

All the sessions run online on Zoom. They are not recorded.

You’ll need a stable internet connection and a willingness to try something new.

By the end of the day you’ll be able to say:

✓  I’ve noticed what I’m genuinely drawn to photograph.

✓  I’ve tried several different ways of seeing, and know which feel like me.

✓  I’ve made photographs that feel like mine.

✓  I know how to keep exploring this on my own.
